Tolerance tests or in use tests

In use tests enable to check the good tolerance of the cosmetics products.

These tests are conducted under medical control, most of the time performed by a dermatologist, but also by an ophthalmologist, an allergist, ….

These tests consist in a clinical examination at the beginning and at the end of the study, under normal conditions of use in a target panel for 21 or 28 days. If applicable, the physical signs and the functional signs are noted after use of the product and after questioning the panelists, the imputability of the product being then evaluated. Under the conditions of this study, it is also possible to quantify the non comedogenic effect of a product by counting of the inflammatory and retentional elements on the application area, at the beginning and at the end of the treatment period.

The satisfaction of the subjects testing such a product is also evaluated through a self-evaluation questionnaire.

 

Efficacy testing

The efficacy tests enable to evaluate the performance of the cosmetics products. They enable to provide the proof of the effect claimed for the cosmetic product.

CERCO elaborates and performs number of clinical studies in this area and has recourse to number of methodologies according to the needs:

  • Subjective tests: self-evaluation by scale/questionnaire
  • Scientific tests:

- Scoring by a trained assessor basing on from photographic atlas
- Instrumental tests

 

Thus, the techniques implemented by CERCO enable to measure the following parameters (click on one of the pictograms):

  • SKIN BARRIER AND HYDRATATION

    The measurement of the skin barrier, hydrolipidic film or hydration enables to evaluate a moisturizing, nourishing, mattifying effect but also a protective or anti-dehydrating effect and to identify the products that respect skin barrier.

    Within this framework, different measuring devices can be used:

    Corneometry
    Measuring the hydration rate of the superficial layers of the epidermis in order to evaluate the moisturizing power of a cosmetic product. CERCO uses a sensor fitted with 2 metallic electrodes which measure the electric current generated; this technique is based on the method of dielectric capacitance.

    Sebumetry
    Measuring the lipid or sebum rate on the surface of the skin in order to evaluate the nourishing or matifying power of a given cosmetic formula.

    Tewametry or Aquaflux
    Enabling to measure the transepidermal water loss i.e. the evaporation of the water on the surface of the skin in order to evaluate the variations in barrier function as well as the protective or non drying effects of cosmetic preparations. This method is based on Fink’s diffusion law.

    Image analysis
    Allowing to quantify the cosmetic effects of a product basing on photographs obtained from video-microscope, a camera or a digital camera and analyzed thanks to a image analysis software. As an example, this technique enables to measure the sebaceous excretion.

  • SKIN RELIEF

    The measurement of the skin relief enables to measure smoothing, restructuring, anti-wrinkle, anti-cellulite, anti-orange peel, anti- eye bags effects……

    Two techniques can be used:

    The fringe projection
    Enabling to reconstitutes in a single measurement, a 3D image of the skin surface. This non invasive optical method allows measurements of very high resolution (1 to 2 µm) in a very quick time (less than 1 second) without any contact. It enables to measure an anti-wrinkle effect, a smoothing of the micro-relief network* or an anti-orange peel effect.

    To do so, CERCO has two powerful devices at its disposal:

    = the Dermatop® fringe projection system allowing to measure directly in vivo or on replicas small areas corresponding to all the body parts;

    = the AEVA-HE ®, a topometric measurement system enabling a very accurate analysis on face and body involving all kind of volumes and perimeters measurements.

     

    The Visia ®
    Corresponding to an imaging box that takes photos of face under standard, white, cross polarized, parallel polarized, UV and fluorescent lights. It enables to visualize and to measure the intensity and the number of wrinkles, pigmentary spots, redness, pores, porphyrins and the global skin texture.

    Visia TEST

    * Micro-relief network: it characterizes the skin surface. It is made up of the lines crossing our body and delimiting polygons according to specific orientations. After application of a cosmetic product, it is thus possible to characterize the changes in this morphology of skin relief, notably according ageing.

  • SLIMNESS

    The measurement of slimness enables to evaluate not only draining and slimming effects but also the effect on sponginess and orange-peel while controlling the absence of weight variations.

    CERCO can implement different techniques to assess the efficacy of a slimming product:

    The High resolution
    Ultrasound scan enabling to visualize the subcutaneous structures, the dermis (thickness and density) and the hypodermis (thickness, density and invaginations). Two probes respectively allow to measure from 10 to 35 mm deep with a resolution ranging from 72 to 135 µm. This technique can be used to check the effect of the anti-cellulite or draining products.

    The fringe projection
    Enabling to reconstitutes in a single measurement, a 3D image of the skin surface.     The Impedancimetry
    Corresponding to the measurement of the resistance to the conduction of a electric power with very low amperage in the body, imperceptible and devoid of risk. It is thus possible to measure BMI, fat mass, fluid level and muscle mass…. This technique is used to study the effect of the slimming and draining products.

    The centimetric
    Measurements enabling to evaluate on a great number of subjects the slimming effect of a product. These measurements have to be made at stabilized pressure and in the same place to ensure the repeatability and the reproducibility of the results. It is also very important to control that the subjects do not change anything in their dietary and sportive habits

  • BIOMECHANICS

    The measurement of the biomechanical properties of the skin enables to evaluate the effect on the skin firmness, elasticity, tonicity and fatigability.

    The main technique which is used is:

    The Cutometry
    Allowing to measure after a small suction of the skin, its maximal extensibility and then its capacity to return to the basic position. According to the curves obtained after one or repeated suctions of the skin each for 1 second, number of parameters can be determined,all of them related to the biomechanical properties of the skin.

  • COLOR

    The measurement of the colour enables different evaluations ranging from the lasting effect of make-up to the appearance of some coloration after application of a self-tanning product but also the measurement of dark circles, redness, radiance, lightening and depigmenting effect.

    CERCO has recourse to the following techniques:

    The Spectrocolorimetry
    Allowing to measure the variations in spectral reflectance according to the L.a.b System®

     

    The COLORSKIN® software
    Equiped with a pattern corresponding to an imaging box that takes photos of face under white, UV and fluorescent light. The pattern enables to reposition the colorimetric parameters of the photographs the photos and then to determine their colorimetric definition.

  • MICROCIRCULATION

    The measurement of the microcirculation enables to evaluate the effect of a massage or of a product on the superficial skin microcirculation, as well as the effect on tired legs or on redness.

    To do so the main device to which CERCO recourse to is:

    The Laser Doppler
    Allowing to measure the red blood cells flow in the dermal blood vessels by means of a laser beam. This device enables to measure skin microcirculation (tired legs, anti-dark circles, slimness, rosacea) as well as the oxygen partial pressure when using another probe (cellular respiration).

     

    Additional more general techniques enable to complement this analysis:

    The image analysis
    Allowing to quantify the cosmetic effects of the products from photographs coming from video-microscope, camera or digital camera by means of an image analysis software. As an example, this technique enables to measure the lengthening effect of a mascara or the moisturizing effect of a cream by observing skin desquamation.

    The clinical evaluation
    Corresponding to the comparison of photographs to grades enabling to identify visually the effect of a product. As an example, the lasting effect of a nail varnish can be determined or the effect on orange-peel can be evaluated.
